Taking digital signage to the skies

This is pretty impressive, though I suspect the operating and capital costs are also pretty impressive.

A company call Lightship has lifted off with a giant blimp with a very large LCD sign wrapped along one side. The 70 foot wide screen can play stills or video and is very definitely a floating billboard.

Orlando-based Lightship, a subsidiary of a company already in the blimp business, has partnered on the technology with Sanyo.

According to the company and some news coverage, the images will look like heck up close — the resolution is just 240 by 128 — and will only show single color video in daylight. But this is all about impact, not image quality.

One news story suggeste the capital cost the video airship is well south of $1 million, which isn't that frightening when you think about what could be charged for ad time on these puppies.

Looking forward to seeing one.
