Another type shopping mall with sky screen

In the world of seriously big signs nothing comes close to the Fremont Street Experience, the massive LED board that serves as a canopy over a couple of blocks of downtown Las Vegas.

Nothing until just lately.

A Chinese developer has unveiled a massive LED lightboard installation that works in many ways like the Fremont installation — and even used the original’s mastermind — but takes advantage of the latest LED technology ands rendering and design software.

The installation is the centrepiece of The Place, an urban mall in Beijing which has the classic Engrish tag line: “Another type shopping mall with sky screen

Reports LEDs magazine:

A huge suspended LED screen forms the centerpiece of The Place, a new retail development in Beijing’s central business district. The Skyscreen is 250 m long and 30 m wide, and was built with an investment of RMB 250 million ($32 million). The screen is suspended six stories high (80 feet) above a plaza between two new retail centers.

The displays were supplied by Taiwan-based LED display manufacturer Opto Tech. The screens have an open grid structure to allow natural lighting during the day.

Five individual displays have been combined to form the giant screen, but the displays can also operate individually and show images in film or TV format. The screens have connections to play giant video games, and can broadcast live events, as well as showing televised events. They can advertise products, and there is even a section where visitors can upload photos of themselves or their friends.

The screen does not appear to be add oriented, but is more attuned to an art installation and quite a bit more subtle than the flags and eagles thing at Fremont, which reminded me of the opening the Stephen Colbert show. Shaky YouTube vid here.

If you were thinking that would be cool for your client, the answer is $32 million.
